“Fulfillment service can’t be blank”: quick fix for Shopify CSV imports

What the message means

Each variant has a fulfillment service: manual when you ship orders yourself, or the name of a fulfillment app. When the column Fulfillment service (older files: Variant Fulfillment Service) is present and a variant row leaves it empty, Shopify rejects that variant. The help center’s fix: enter the service name, or manual if you don’t use one.

How to fix it

1. Filter the fulfillment service column for empty cells on variant rows.
2. Enter manual unless the product is fulfilled by an app, in which case use that service’s handle as it appears in an export from your store.
3. Alternatively, delete the whole column when you create new products; new variants then use Shopify’s default.
4. Save as CSV UTF-8 and import again.

Why it often appears with old templates

Older templates and some supplier exports include every Shopify column, including fulfillment service, and leave many cells empty. Deleting unused columns is often safer than filling them. When you update existing products, remember that an empty cell in a column you keep overwrites the current value.

Build the file with fewer surprises

The Shopify CSV template shows the current columns with valid example values. If you are converting a supplier list, Sheet2Store exports only the columns it fills, so empty required fields don’t reach Shopify.
