“Ignored line because handle already exists”: fixing duplicate handles
Two separate products in your file (or one in the file and one already in your store) use the same URL handle. Shopify keeps the first and ignores the second.
Ignored line #-## because handle `example` already existsWhat the message means
The URL handle identifies a product and becomes its web address, so it must be unique. Shopify’s help center describes the cause as duplicate product handles in the CSV. When a later row for that handle starts a new product with its own title, Shopify doesn’t merge the two, and those lines are ignored.
Common causes
- Handles built from short titles: “Cotton Throw Natural” and “Cotton Throw Graphite” both became
cotton-throw. - The same product appears twice in the supplier list, with different titles or prices.
- The product is already in your store and you imported without “Overwrite products with matching handles”.
- Variants written as separate products, each with a title, instead of as variant rows.
How to fix it
- Search the file for the handle named in the message.
- If the rows are variants of one product, keep the title only on the first row and put the differences in option columns (see the variants guide).
- If they are different products, give each a unique handle, for example by adding the color or the SKU:
cotton-throw-natural. - If the product already exists in your store and you meant to update it, import with Overwrite products with matching handles checked. Remember that empty columns overwrite existing values.
- Import again.
Prevent it next time
Generate handles from something unique, such as the title plus the parent SKU. Sheet2Store creates each handle from the product group plus a short unique code, so two products never collide, and it flags duplicate variant combinations in the review table before you export.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify rename duplicate handles automatically?
Not in CSV imports. The line is ignored and you have to change the handle yourself.
Can I change a product’s handle later?
Yes, in the product’s search engine listing settings. Shopify can create a URL redirect from the old address when you change it there.
What characters can a handle contain?
Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. Spaces and special characters are converted or cause mismatches.
Turn a supplier file into an import-ready CSV
Upload a supplier PDF, Excel or CSV price list. Map the columns, set your markup, fix flagged rows and download a Shopify or WooCommerce CSV. The first five rows are free to preview.
