“Not a valid product category”: fixing the Product category column
The Product category column contains a value that isn’t in Shopify’s Standard Product Taxonomy. Use an exact category path or ID from the taxonomy, or leave the column empty.

Product category isn’t free text. It must match a category in Shopify’s Standard Product Taxonomy, which Shopify uses for things like tax calculation and category-specific fields. Your own labels belong in Type or Tags instead. Shopify’s fix is to match the exact category breadcrumb or ID.
Common causes
- Supplier or store categories (“Cushions & Throws”) typed into Product category.
- Partial or reworded paths, such as a missing level or a different separator.
- Translated category names from a supplier file in another language.
How to fix it
- Open a product in Shopify admin and pick the category there to see its exact name and position in the taxonomy, or browse Shopify’s published Standard Product Taxonomy.
- Copy the full category path or the category ID into the Product category column, exactly as written.
- Move your own grouping labels to
TypeorTags. - If you are unsure, leave Product category empty and set categories in the admin after importing.
Keep categories separate from your own types
Treat Product category as Shopify’s classification and Type as yours. It keeps imports from failing and lets you rename your own groups without touching the taxonomy.
